Native to North America. found in streams and ponds as well as brackwish water. 
One of the best plants for breeding fish as well as invertebrates. The long stems providw an excellent place for fish to lay eggs as well as provide protection to new born  animals. 
Can be planted but is most commonly floated in the water column. 
Doesn't require special conditions to grow and is regarded as being a hardy aquarium plant.
